By Simon Parry In Manila, The Philippines, For Mailonline Street children as young as five are being caged in brutal detention centres alongside adult criminals in a cynical drive to smarten up the Philippines capital ahead of a visit by Pope Francis this week. Hundreds of boys and girls have been rounded up from doorways and roadsides by police and officials and put behind bars in recent weeks to make the poverty-racked city more presentable when Pope Francis arrives tomorrow, a MailOnline investigation has found. In a blatant abuse of the country's own child protection laws, the terrified children are locked up in filthy detention centres where they sleep on concrete floors and where many of them are beaten or abused by older inmates and adult prisoners and, in some cases, starved and chained to pillars. Six million people are expected to attend an open air mass conducted by Pope Francis in Manila's Rizal Park on Sunday, which will watched by a global TV audience and officials appear determined to ensure that urchins are hidden from view. “They (Muslims) say: ‘No, we are not this, the Koran is a book of peace, it is a prophetic book of peace,’” he added.
The pope also called on key Muslim leaders to condemn terrorism when it’s conducted in the name of Islam. Such “global condemnation” would do a lot toward warding off stereotypes against Islam, he said. This move was initiated by the Pope Francis in order to bring peace between Israelis and Palestinians. During his visit last week to Jordan Israel, and the Palestinian Authority, Pope Francis invited Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas. Peres’s spokesperson has announced in Times of Israel that Abbas, Peres, and Pope Francis will be joined by Jewish, Christian and Islamic religious leaders. According to the officials, these evening prayers would be a “pause in politics” and have no political aim behind it other than the desire to bring peace and respect to the Israeli-Palestinian relations, states the Associated Press. The Vatican will broadcast the event worldwide through the official website. An Oklahoma-based satanic group called Dakhma of Angra Mainyu has leased space in the Civic Center Music Hall, which is owned and operated by the city, for a black mass on Sept. 21. The event is booked for the Cityspace theater, the facility’s smallest theater space, said Jennifer McClintock, public information officer for the Civic Center. She told WND the city will not block the black mass from being held despite an uproar among Christian and family groups, which are mobilizing to stop it. Kenneth Copeland and James Robison are two religious leaders in northeast Texas known for drawing huge crowds to their services and events, and who were a part of leading the group identifying as a “delegation of Evangelical Christian leaders” in its meeting with the Roman Catholic pontiff late last month. The pope said during his daily mass that the Catholic Church should not close its doors to people who wish to be baptized, even if they are “green men, with a long nose and big ears, like children draw,” French news agency AFP reported. “If tomorrow, for example, an expedition of Martians arrives and some of them come to us … and if one of them says: ‘Me, I want to be baptized!’, what would happen?” he joked. The Argentine pontiff is known for his colorful sense of humor and his down-to-earth style in representing the Church. Francis has been firm in his stance, arguing that children of divorced or cohabiting parents should not be denied a baptism, AFP said. Without this, we are not Christians. We entered the Church through baptism: there we are Christians,” Francis said during Mass on Thursday, Vatican Radio reported. “A Christian without a church is something purely idealistic, it is not real,” the Roman Catholic Church leader argued. He said that one cannot “understand a Christian alone” any more than “Jesus Christ alone” can be understood. Source: NBC News Author: CLAUDIO LAVANGA TICAN CITY — The Israeli and Palestinian presidents joined in an unprecedented prayer meeting with Pope Francis Sunday, a gesture the pontiff hopes will "re-create a desire, a possibility" of kick-starting the stalled Middle East peace process. Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accepted a surprise public invitation from Francis to come to “his home” to pray together during his recent visit to the region. “It is my hope that this meeting will mark the beginning of a new journey where we seek the things that unite, so as to overcome the things that divide,” Francis said Sunday. He thanked the presidents for accepting his invitation, and said that people of varied cultures and religions had been praying for a meeting of this nature. The Vatican is keen to play down suggestions that Sunday’s event is political, but it is nonetheless a symbolic gesture that has the power to stir public opinion and put pressure on the Israeli and Palestinian authorities to find a way out of the stalemate. |
