WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) - A Warren bar, which was the scene of the city's first homicide of 2013, is now a church.
Christian music is the only kind of music you will hear coming from the former Sunset Lounge on Market Street in Warren. Guests will be walking through the doors on Sunday mornings, instead of Saturday nights.
The Sunset Lounge closed down earlier this year after 25-year-old Cory Blackwell of Warren was shot at a party at the bar on New Year's Day. Police believe the shooting happened during a fight on the dance floor.
The building is now the Movement Church. Pastor Doug Garasic said the bar's history made him want the building even more.
"We wanted this building. We wanted it bad, because we knew that God would get a lot of glory for a place like this," said Garasic.
The entire lounge has been renovated. The bar, that once stirred up alcohol drinks, is now a café bar serving coffee and snacks. This is the church's second location, the first is located inside Eastwood Mall.
Church members said they were moved by the shooting and hope the church makes a positive impact.
"I mean, the whole story about Jesus is bringing life where there was death...And bringing hope where there was hopelessness. We're just thankful. Everyone here is just grateful to be even a small part of change and breakthrough," said parishioner Debby Rodgers.
The Movement Church will hold two services every Sunday morning, one at 10 a.m. and one at 11:30 a.m.
