Source: The NY Times By ABBE SMITH As we commemorate the 50th anniversary of Gideon v. Wainwright, the landmark Supreme Court decision that gave poor defendants the right to counsel, it would be nice to celebrate. That case, taken together with the 1967 decision In re Gault, which gave juveniles the same rights in court as adults, stands for the principle that process matters in our system of justice; when faced with the awesome power of the state, the accused — rich or poor, old or young — must be properly armed. Two recent books put a damper on the celebration, revealing just how random and impoverished justice can be, and how flimsy the right to counsel. In “Kids for Cash,” the investigative reporter William Ecenbarger tells the story behind a corruption scandal so brazen and cruel it defies imagination. Between 2003 and 2008, two Pennsylvania judges accepted millions of dollars in kickbacks from a private juvenile detention facility in exchange for sending children — girls and boys, some as young as 11 — to jail. Source: The Prophetic News Author: Christopher Gregory I’m going to expose something within this article that needs to be exposed, and that is the reality of demonic possession within Hollywood and the entertainment industry. One of Hollywood’s biggest secrets is the fact that within the film industry, there is an undercurrent of spiritual darkness that not only is capturing the hearts and lives of many a talented individual, but that same darkness is making inroads into the lives of some of the biggest names in film and television. Since the early 1960’s thru the 1970’s, occultism began to make inroads within the heart of America. People were finding the occult as “fun” and “entertaining”. The popularity of such tools such as the Ouija board were not only becoming staples into the homes of many middle class families, but the Ouija would be glorified within a motion picture that would literally change the very way horror movies would be made, and it’s name was “The Exorcist”. Source: The Verge Author: Joseph Parish The government has the ability to track cellphones using the portable device pictured above called the Stingray — it was recently revealed in a criminal case in Arizona, but the government doesn't want anyone to know how it works. When the judge in the case asked for more information about the Stingray in order to determine if its use requires a search warrant, the government filed a memo basically arguing both ways: it said Stingray use generally doesn't require a warrant, but concedes that one was required in this specific instance — a huge concession that could cost them the case, just so the Stingray's design and functionality remain a secret. Source: Politifact.com Rumors of third Barack Obama term are satire passed off as truthShare this story: Who says President Barack Obama -- facing weak approval ratings, a tough midterm election and growing outrage over problems in veterans’ health care facilities -- is in the dumps? He’s headed to a third term! Or at least that’s the claim now bouncing around the Internet. A reader recently emailed us to ask if we could check out something they’d run into online -- a story titled, "Obama Announces Plans For A Third Term Presidential Run." As we'll see, it's another case of a satirical article being passed off as real. Source: NBC News Author: CLAUDIO LAVANGA TICAN CITY — The Israeli and Palestinian presidents joined in an unprecedented prayer meeting with Pope Francis Sunday, a gesture the pontiff hopes will "re-create a desire, a possibility" of kick-starting the stalled Middle East peace process. Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accepted a surprise public invitation from Francis to come to “his home” to pray together during his recent visit to the region. “It is my hope that this meeting will mark the beginning of a new journey where we seek the things that unite, so as to overcome the things that divide,” Francis said Sunday. He thanked the presidents for accepting his invitation, and said that people of varied cultures and religions had been praying for a meeting of this nature. The Vatican is keen to play down suggestions that Sunday’s event is political, but it is nonetheless a symbolic gesture that has the power to stir public opinion and put pressure on the Israeli and Palestinian authorities to find a way out of the stalemate. |
